“I don’t march,” Sarah Stevenson has often said. But at age 90 she is still bringing people together for community causes.
AME Zion Senior Bishop George Battle noted her lifelong interest in bringing people together in his reflections and prayer. Johnson C. Smith University President Ronald Carter explained that he opens JCSU’s facilities to Stevenson because her vision and mission mirror the university’s vision and mission to serve the community, and particularly the Beatties Ford Road corridor where she and the university reside.
There was no marching – and until the afterparty no dancing – at this event. But a key purpose was to advance the fundraising undertaken by Stevenson this year to fulfill a pledge. The pledge was to young people in South Africa, that if they worked at their studies and raised airfare and other expenses, that she would do what she could to find tuition dollars that would give them an experience of a U.S. college education at Johnson C. Smith University.
